Description:

Unleashing the Tiger? Competition Law in China and Hong Kong
A Melbourne Law School - Gilbert + Tobin Conference

On 4 October 2008, the Melbourne Law School hosted a significant one-day conference on the emergence of competition law in China and Hong Kong. Sponsored by premier competition law firm Gilbert + Tobin, the Australia and New Zealand School of Government, and the Asian Competition Forum, the conference brought together an impressive line-up of speakers from the senior ranks of government agencies, the legal profession, business sector and academia from Australia, China, Hong Kong, India and Washington to explore these major developments. The conference was opened by the new Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, the Hon. Robert French CJ, and was attended by over 100 guests. Topics covered the background to the Chinese and (proposed) Hong Kong competition legislation; concentration control; implications for foreign business and investment; enforcement challenges; development of the competition law profession; and international, regional and comparative perspectives. The conference was organised by Melbourne Law School's Director of Studies, Competition Law, Dr Caron Beaton-Wells. The program for the conference and the slides used by the speakers are available below:
