About the program
A professional edge
The Melbourne Law Masters offers masters degrees and graduate diplomas across 20 specialist legal areas. The program's huge choice of subjects and specialisations gives you the opportunity to hone your legal knowledge and expertise and gain a real professional edge.
Courses available to both law and non-law graduates
With the exception of the Master of Laws (LLM), all our subjects and courses are available to suitably qualified law and non-law graduates.
Your fellow students will include legal practitioners from Australia's top firms, barristers and in-house counsel from major corporations, as well as professionals from industries including finance, health, construction and resources. Sports administrators, as well as media and tax professionals all undertake our courses, along with those from state and federal government and employees of international NGOs and charities.
Huge range of specialisations and subjects
The Melbourne Law Masters offers a huge range of legal specialisations to allow students to tailor their course to suit their goals. Our programs combine the latest legal professional expertise with academic excellence, offering an insight into new and emerging areas of law and honing our students' legal knowledge and skills. The curriculum is developed in conjunction with a network of advisory boards drawn from the judiciary, leading law firms, industry and the Bar to ensure that the program remains at the cutting edge of legal knowledge.
Small classes
All classes in the Melbourne Law Masters program are limited to a maximum of 25 to 30 students.
We are committed to providing a positive learning experience that encourages participation from all our students and we believe that limiting class sizes is an integral part of this commitment. Melbourne Law Masters classes are not taught in large lecture theatres but in small seminar rooms to encourage the involvement of all students and facilitate networking and interaction between students and lecturers.
Our diverse student body means you will also learn from your fellow students and peers, gaining new perspectives on legal issues and the way they impact our community.
Intensive study mode
Around 90 percent of all subjects offered in 2010 are taught on an intensive basis over five consecutive weekdays of study, with approximately five hours of classes per day. Our timetable has been developed in this way to make it easier for busy professionals as well as interstate and even international visitors to participate in our subjects and courses. The intensive study mode also encourages participants to truly immerse themselves in the subject content, creating a dynamic learning environment.
We also offer some subjects for two hours a week over one semester. These semester length subjects are offered outside traditional business hours so that full-time workers can take part.
Outstanding teaching staff
The Melbourne Law Masters' teaching staff brings together the best legal minds in Australia and includes leading scholars, practitioners and industry professionals with specialist expertise, as well as visiting international scholars and practitioners to offer an extraordinary depth of knowledge.
In 2010, international teachers in the Melbourne Law Masters will include academics from institutions such as Oxford, New York University and the Sorbonne. Legal practitioners from international organisations such as the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund will also teach in the program next year.
