Melbourne – the world’s ‘Ultimate Sports City’
If we needed more proof that Melbourne is the sporting capital of the universe, the city has retained its status as the best location in the world to hold a sports event and has been declared Ultimate Sports City in 2008.The April issue of SportBusiness International gives Melbourne the title once again after the city's previous win 18 months ago. It provides yet another example of the wide-ranging expertise in sport administration and major events here in this cosmopolitan city.
Here at the Law School, we have extensive expertise in this area and the subject Event Management Law forms an integral part of our graduate program in sports law.
The report profiles 25 cities with selection based on the number and importance of international and major annual sport events hosted or awarded between 2004 and 2012. Cities were awarded scores across a number of categories and over 100 interviews conducted with government departments, city officials, event organisers, federations and industry specialists helped with the final decision.
Melbourne beat the German capital of Berlin, which came in at second place, Aussie rival Sydney in third, London in fourth place and Winter Olympics 2010 host Vancouver in fifth.
